40 MILE POINT
LIGHTHOUSE

The Bunk House

The building of 40 Mile Point Lighthouse was originally proposed in 1889.  Plans and specifications for the station were finally approved in 1896. The lightship Amaranth arrived at 40 Mile Point on July 5, 1896, carrying materials and workers from the Detroit Depot. Work began immediately to construct a wood-framed building that would house the work crew during construction of the lighthouse and later serve as a barn for the keeper's horses. Over the years the Bunk House has also served as a Coast Guard office and may have been used as temporary housing for survivors of the Fay shipwreck.  This structure still stands and after renovation during the winter of 2006-2007, is utilized as the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse gift shop.
